Good dental health starts with prevention, and that is the focus of our general and preventive dentistry near Stroud. Regular examinations find problems early, when treatment is smaller, simpler and less costly.
Our dentists and our hygienists work together. Every dentist here encourages patients to see our hygienists, Kerry Braithwaite or Katherine Griffiths, for regular hygiene visits, and refers implant patients to them every 3 months.
Keeping your place as a patient. After your new patient examination, please see one of our dentists for a check-up at least once a year. If more than two years pass without a visit to a dentist or hygienist here, your next examination is charged as a new patient examination (£120) instead of a check-up (£55). Seeing one of our hygienists counts as a visit, so regular hygiene appointments keep your place even if your check-up is late.
What a check-up (review examination) includes
Once you have had your new patient examination, your yearly check-up is a short review examination. It keeps your dental records up to date and lets us spot any changes in your mouth since your last visit.
- An update of your medical history, medicines and dental records
- A check of your teeth, fillings, crowns and gums for any changes since last time
- A look at the soft tissues of your mouth, including oral cancer screening
- Digital X-rays only when needed, at a low radiation dose (£19 per image)
- Brief advice on cleaning and diet
If we find something that needs more time, such as a full gum assessment, a bite problem or a 3D CBCT scan on our own Planmeca scanner, we explain it and book a separate appointment with an estimate.
The standard of care you should expect
Every dental professional in the UK must be registered with the General Dental Council and follow its Standards for the Dental Team: putting patients' interests first, communicating clearly, obtaining valid consent, keeping records confidential, having a clear complaints procedure, and working only within their training and competence. At Miserden, a thorough private oral health review includes:
- Your medical history, medicines and lifestyle, updated at every visit (you can do this beforehand on our online patient portal)
- A full check of teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints, including gum pocket measurements (BPE)
- Oral cancer screening of the lips, tongue, cheeks and throat
- X-rays only when clinically justified, at the lowest dose needed, following radiation safety law (IR(ME)R)
- A written plan and estimate before any treatment, with the risks, benefits and alternatives explained
- A personal recall interval. National guidance from NICE recommends a check every 3 to 24 months for adults and every 3 to 12 months for children, based on your own risk, rather than a fixed six months for everyone
Regular hygiene visits, usually every 3 to 6 months, sit alongside your check-ups to keep gums healthy and catch problems early.
General and preventive treatments we provide
- Fillings. BPA-free white (composite) fillings £220 to £280, or glass ionomer £110.
- Root canal treatment. To save a tooth that is infected or badly decayed, usually in two stages: £450 for the first stage and £350 for the second. We will always explain the alternatives, including extraction. See root canal fees.
Complex root canal treatment: specialist referral
Most root canal treatment is done here by Dr Nikki Izadi or Dr Alexander Doan-Gill. For very complex cases, such as curved or blocked canals, re-treatment of an old root filling, or a tooth under a bridge, we can refer you to specialist endodontist Dr Massimo Giovarruscio (GDC 101522) at Bristol Specialist Dental Clinic, 9 North View, Westbury Park, Bristol BS6 7PT (0117 923 8400). Your dentist here sends the referral straight to the clinic using their online referral form, with Dr Giovarruscio as your preferred clinician, and the clinic then contacts you to book. He sets his own fees and gives you a written treatment plan with estimated costs before he starts.
If you live closer to Stroud and the Chalford valley, we can instead refer you to Dr Mihnea Pintilie (DMD, Titu Maiorescu University, Romania, 2019; GDC 303731) at Fourways Dental Surgery, Middle Hill, Chalford Hill, Stroud GL6 8BD (01453 884 634). Dr Pintilie is not a specialist; he is a dentist with a special interest in endodontics who only does root canal treatment. If you ask, he will use a BPA-free filling material. About root canal treatment at Fourways or contact the practice. Fourways sets its own fees.
You are welcome to come back to us for your crown. After specialist treatment, a root-filled tooth usually needs a crown or onlay to protect it. We can make it in our own on-site laboratory, Implant and Ceramic Centre, so your dentist and technician plan it together with you. - Extractions. Gentle removal when a tooth cannot be saved: £250 for a routine adult extraction, or from £350 for a complicated or surgical extraction, depending on the time needed. Every tooth matters: a missing tooth raises the risk of long-term problems for the teeth next to it and opposite it, so we will talk you through replacing it before it is removed. Why replacing a missing tooth matters. Dr Zac Cox, Dr Nikki Izadi and Dr Alexander Doan-Gill clean out the socket thoroughly after every extraction (cavitation care). - Protecting the bone after an extraction. When a tooth is removed, the bone and gum around the gap naturally shrink, and neighbouring teeth can drift into the space. If you would like to keep the bone, ask your dentist whether a bone graft at the time of extraction (socket preservation, £380 to £450) is right for you. You can choose the type of bone material: synthetic (EthOss), a fully man-made, animal-free material that Dr Zac Cox uses, or animal-derived (bovine) bone mineral. Your dentist will explain which suits your case. The advice depends on how much the teeth are likely to move after the extraction, the level of infection, and your future treatment plan, for example an implant, a bridge or leaving the space. - Fissure sealants. £50 per tooth to protect children's back teeth.

Checking your bite: facebow and T-Scan readings
Your bite changes over time, and after crowns, implants, dentures or tooth loss. Too much force on some teeth can lead to chipped teeth or crowns, worn enamel, loose teeth or jaw discomfort. To see what is happening, Dr Nikki Izadi, Dr Alexander Doan-Gill and Dr George Lazaridis can take the readings below; T-Scan readings are also taken by our hygienist and therapist Kerry Braithwaite:
- A facebow reading. A record of how your upper jaw relates to your jaw joints, so models of your teeth can be mounted on an articulator and your bite studied in detail.
- A T-Scan reading. You bite on a thin sensor and the computer shows how much force lands on each tooth and in what order your teeth meet. Repeating it over time shows whether your bite is changing.
Jaw ache or clenching? After a jaw (TMJ) massage with Kerry, Dr Nikki Izadi can check your bite and fit an anterior deprogrammer (a small anterior bite jig), with instructions, as a diagnostic test: whether your symptoms ease while you wear it helps show if your bite is involved. You keep a simple pain diary for two weeks, scoring your pain out of 10 each day, so we can see whether it comes down; then a quick review with Nikki (£55) decides the next step, including a diagnosis or a referral if needed. See jaw (TMJ) problems: book yourself. This 20-minute appointment is £110 and works best on a Wednesday, when Kerry and Nikki are both in.
A facebow reading is £120 and a T-Scan reading is £90. Study models are listed under diagnostics and extras.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a check-up? A check-up is a short review examination, £55. It updates your medical history and dental records and checks for any changes in your mouth since your last visit. Additional X-rays are £19 each.
How often should I have a check-up? At least once a year after your new patient examination. If more than two years pass without a visit to one of our dentists or hygienists, your next examination is charged as a new patient examination (£120). Hygiene visits count as a visit.
What are facebow and T-Scan readings? They show how your bite works. A facebow reading (£120) records how your jaws relate so your bite can be studied on an articulator; a T-Scan reading (£90) measures the force and timing on each tooth. Dr Nikki Izadi, Dr Alexander Doan-Gill and Dr George Lazaridis take both; Kerry Braithwaite also takes T-Scan readings.
